Kilkenny Chess Club
One of Ireland's most established regional chess clubs. Welcomes juniors and adults for competitive league tournament prep and friendly matches.
When and where
Kilkenny Chess Club meets every Monday at 7:00 PM. It meets in a function room at the Club House Hotel, Patrick Street, Kilkenny City, Co. Kilkenny.
Times and venues do move, particularly at the start of a new season and around bank holidays, so it is worth confirming the next date with the group before travelling.
What to expect
Kilkenny Chess Club is a drop-in games night rather than a league or a tournament. People bring games, someone teaches the rules, and groups form around whatever is on the table that evening. Sessions typically run from short filler games early on to something longer once everyone has arrived.
You do not need to own anything or know any of the games. Regulars keep a collection between them and teaching newcomers is a normal part of the night, not a favour. Arriving alone is completely standard.
If there is a particular game you want to play, most groups are happy to be asked in advance so somebody brings it.
Who it suits
Anyone who likes games, including people who have never played anything beyond the family classics. Equally suited to going alone as to bringing someone.
